Everything but superficial
Permanent exhibition
Look deep below the surface and discover with us the testimonies of human history which are hidden there. In our permanent exhibition you follow a walkway through an artificial excavation landscape past Bronze Age graves and Roman wells, through Neanderthal caves and a medieval city. In our multiple-award-winning research laboratory you can become a researcher and discover for yourself the various methods used by scientists to decipher the traces of the past.

Special exhibitions
From the history of the shoe to the plague or Stonehenge: Once a year we stage special exhibitions to take a closer scientific look at certain subjects. Our focus is on cultural-historical topics of global importance and current social relevance. The exhibitions present the results of interdisciplinary and international cooperation. They are in their form appealing and staged using multimedia. The next exhibiton features Modern Archeology.

Excavation CAMP
Outside the museum, our excavation CAMP regularly opens its gates. Under a tent roof all the elements of an archaeological dig are realistically presented. Guided by an excavation leader, you learn everything you need to know about excavating: how to uncover finds with a trowel and brush, how to measure them with a tape measure and yardstick and how to document the finds with a drawing board and an excavation diary. The Excavation CAMP can, on request, be visited on fixed dates on Sundays and public holidays by groups of different ages.
